We empirically investigate the impact of category captaincy, an arrangement exactly where the retailer will work solely with a maker to handle each the manufacturer’s and his rivals’ products. Using a exceptional information set that incorporates data on category captaincy as perfectly as SKU-retailer-amount gross sales and price across 24 retail chains and 8 local marketplaces in the United States for a frozen foodstuff group, we quantify the impact of captaincy on charges, assortments, revenue, and purchaser welfare. Apparently, our estimates counsel that captaincy can lead to welfare gains for individuals, which argues towards a purely detrimental perspective of captaincy by coverage makers.
