Guilford County Food Drive Starts This Weekend

Guilford County is partnering with community groups to help address food insecurity in the area with a new meal distribution program.

Guilford CARES Feeding the Community Food Drive starts on Saturday, February 6, and will run for the next few months. The goal of the program is to distribute 500 boxes of food bi-weekly over the next 10 weeks. Each package will include meat and fresh produce and should feed a family of four for two weeks.

County officials are partnering with local churches and nonprofit organizations, including Second Harvest Food Pantry, Open Door Ministries, and New Zion Missionary Baptist Church — where the program begins this weekend.

It’s being funded by the county’s COVID response initiatives, which were approved by the board of commissioners. Nearly $300,000 in federal funds were marked to help address food insecurities.

According to a county press release, food drive donations are running low during the pandemic, and more than 90,000 people countywide suffer from food insecurity.
