‘Brooklyn Nets Food Pantry’ Opens At Bed-Stuy School

BED-STUY, BROOKLYN — A Bed-Stuy school has been set up with a new food pantry thanks to the Brooklyn Nets and a local hospital.

The Brooklyn Nets and Hospital for Special Surgery teamed up to open a food pantry at P.S. 308 Clara Cardwell School, found on Quincy Avenue. The pantry will come complete with a nutrition program featuring monthly recipes from some of the NBA team’s stars.

The pantry, to be called The Brooklyn Nets Food Pantry, will help address food insecurity at the school, where a high number of children are from low-income households, organizers said. Food insecurity impacts about 26 percent of Bed-Stuy’s population, according to the Food Bank for New York City.

“We realize the importance of serving the community always, and especially during this time,” HSS President Louis A. Shapiro said in a release. “Our efforts have expanded beyond the walls of our institution, and addressing the food insecurities right in our backyard is something we feel strongly about. By teaming up with the Brooklyn Nets, our goal is to have the food pantry serve as an essential resource for those who need it most.”

The new pantry will be stocked with non-perishable food items and will include support to distribute the free groceries and meals on-site.

Through the nutrition program, the Nets and HSS will release a recipe card each month featuring the ingredients and steps to make a Nets player’s favorite recipe. The cards will include ideas for healthy snack pairings from HSS nutritionists and a physical activity suggestion from the hospital’s physical trainers.

One student from P.S. 308 will even get the opportunity to participate in a virtual cooking class with a Nets player to prepare the recipe, the organizers said.

The food distributions will happen several times a month based on a schedule set up by the school.
