I was born and lifted in East Prolonged Seaside, California which is considered an inner-town ghetto or “hood”. Even though I was a regulation university student, I transformed to both Reform and Orthodox Judaism. I then moved to Israel for nearly six many years the place I served in the Israel Protection Forces. Following 9/11, I served in the United States Military.
I have struggled to merge my African American traditions with my Jewish traditions. For steerage, I browse Rebecca Walker’s “Black, White, & Jewish: Autobiography of a Shifting Self”. In addition, I met with Ethiopian Jews to talk about their traditions, lifestyle, and background. I wished to comprehend the “black-Jewish” encounter.
My earliest memory expanding up in the “hood” in California is consuming absolutely free federal government cheese. In the 1970’s and 1980’s, the US governing administration dispersed no cost cheese to needy communities. We stood in line to collect bricks of cheese in tan packing containers. My mom cooked Mexican-style quesadillas, nachos, and enchiladas with the no cost government cheese.
I also don’t forget working with paper “food stamps” which ended up given by the authorities to bad and battling families. Some people felt to some degree “humiliated” to use the food items stamps to buy foodstuff. On the other hand, I savored applying the meals stamps. I did not really feel inferior for the reason that we were very poor. Rather, I savored lifestyle in our city American shtetl.
The most vivid memory of everyday living in the American ghetto was having the “ghetto candy” and snacks that were marketed in area merchants these as: Now & Laters, Jolly Ranchers, Blow Pops, Purple Hots, Johnny Apple Treats, Alexander the Grape, Funyuns, Cheetos, Doritos, and Sugar Babies. I ruined my teeth by ingesting sweet and taffy all the time.
When I moved to Israel and enlisted in the IDF, I loved visiting the Shekem retail store on base to get Israeli snacks these as Bomba and Bissli. Additionally, I savored taking in Falafel and Shawarma from neighborhood outlets and road venders.
The Israeli new music I listened to was quite different from the audio of the American ghetto. While in Israel, I liked: Aviv Geffen, Rita, Eyal Golan, Shiri Maimon, Shlomo Artzi, Shalom Hanoch, Yehudit Ravitz, Yehoram Gaon, Boaz Sharabi, Ninet Tayeb, Mashinah, HaYehudim, Teapaks, and Stella Maris.

During my childhood, my close friends and I would variety a “Soul Coach Line” which was two parallel strains of men and women showcasing dancers shifting down its heart. “Soul Train” was a well-liked dance and music clearly show.
Though residing in Israel, I also lived in a ghetto called Ramat Amidar between B’nai Brak and Ramat Gan. In the Israeli ghetto, I beloved visiting the local falafel and shawarma retailers and relaxing in Eli Cohen park. I also viewed the first season of the Israeli show Kochav Nolad which was gained by Ninet Tayeb.
Whilst residing near B’nai Brak, I frequented each individual of the Hasidic communities in the town like: Vizhnitz, Satmar, Sanz Zhmigrod, Nadvorne, Bubov, Leilov, Belz, Ger, and others.
I savored ingesting delicious cholent just before Shabbat. I also loved attending a Hasidic tisch soon after Shabbat featuring outstanding Hasidic rebbes such as the Vizhnitzer Rebbe Moshe Hager and the Viznitizer Rebbe Motti Hager.
As an African American Jew who is the two American and Israeli, I sense that I belong to a “Third Culture”. My “Third Culture” is a combine of The united states and Israel, black society and Jewish tradition even so, this new lifestyle is not purely Israeli nor purely American. I are living in an “in between” 3rd Lifestyle that lies someplace amongst Israel and The us.
Currently, I hear to Jewish singers such as: Yaakov Shwekey, Avraham Fried, Benny Friedman, and Ohad Moskowitz. I also hear to urban artists such as: Drake, Lil Wayne, Chief Keef, Snoop Dog, Jay Z, Tupac Shakur, Biggie, 50 Cent, Meek Mill, Travis Scott, DaBaby, Lil Dirk, Juice Wrld, Pop Smoke, and Lil Newborn.
